Heir of the Fae (Dragon’s Gift: The Dark Fae #2) - Linsey Hall

I rated this book a four but that is a generous round-up. I think the mother storyline should have been wrapped up in the first book and then the next books in the series should have been about a different challenge Mari and Tarron had to face together. Basically, I just want this series to be completely different books. Even after just two books, things got very repetitive and while I LOVE this author’s other books (The Charming Cove series), I just don’t think she has the depth for fantasy of this kind.

The author herself also says that most of the Dragon’s Gift brand is closed-door spice UNTIL The Dark Fae series and after two books I did not find that to be true. All we got were a couple of passionate kisses because they are fated mates, followed by one of them saying “we should stop” or some variation of that phrase. Or someone knocks on the door or calls one of them so they get interrupted.

Things I liked:

  • Tarron sounds hot

  • I love the relationship between Mari and Aeri

  • Their house with the secret apartments and workshop sounds so cool

  • The magical town in general sounds fun

  • The books are easy reads and are less than 300 pages so you can read the whole series pretty quickly if you wanted to

Things I didn’t like:

  • Mari’s hairstyle is described as a “bouffant.” I feel like that creates such a specific image in my head and I hated it every time the author said it.

  • The lack of any kind of spice

  • The evil mother storyline. There is nothing inherently wrong with that type of storyline, it just goes on for too long and this is only the second book out of five.

All in all, I decided to DNF this series halfway through the third book because it was just more of the same and after reading reviews of the other books, it doesn’t seem to get better. It kills me to not finish a series but life is too short to read books that don’t light you up.
