Trial by Fae (Dragon’s Gift: The Dark Fae #1) - Linsey Hall
This book was so fun and quick to read but still had good fantasy stuff. At first glance, the book reminded me of a cross between ACOTAR, Throne of Glass, Crescent City (modern urban fantasy setting), and Throne of the Fallen. It didn’t have the depth of ACOTAR or Throne of Glass, but some elements were very similar and the vibe in general was similar to Throne of the Fallen in the sense that it wasn’t a super serious and involved but more fun and flirty. There was no spice in this book but I think there is in other books.
What I liked:
The setting really got me excited for the rest of the book
The demon slayer aspect is cool, even though it kind of becomes a background storyline
The book doesn’t overly dwell on the stressful or negative stuff, which I appreciate because other fantasy books spend CHAPTERS on someone being held in captivity (cough cough From Blood and Ash)
What I didn’t like:
The way Mari’s look is described rubs me the wrong way I don’t know why. There is a fine line between gothic and Halloween and the way it is described, Mari definitely leans Halloween.
While I liked how short the book was, the ending felt really abrupt because of that.
All in all, I like this author so I’m excited to keep reading and liked this book more than I didn’t like it.
