Morbidly Yours (Love in Galway #1) - Ivy Fairbanks
2 stars.
I just didn’t really love this. Asexuality/aromantic/demisexual were kind of casually mentioned as being a part of Callum’s character but it seem like the author did much research to really grasp what those things meant, so it ended up feeling inauthentic. Those identifications are real and deserved to be explored more.
Also, Lark is such an annoying character. 80% of the way through the book she’s still “woe is me” and “I can’t give Callum the life he wants” and then all of a sudden she does a complete 180 but in such a way that she throws caution to the wind, still knowing Callum deserves more but not caring anymore. Not to mention, like why did she have to be from Texas? I feel like that just made her so obnoxious and felt out of place. She could have been from anywhere.
The book in general moved so fast and abruptly in some parts that the development of their relationship felt rushed and the reader doesn’t get to experience it grow naturally. It goes from Callum saying he can’t feel sexual desire without knowing a person or having some kind of connection with them to getting hard in his pants at the mere sight of Lark after like barely any time knowing her. Another example, in one paragraph Callum talks about an idea he has for Lark’s upcoming birthday and the literal next paragraph it’s her birthday already.
I say skip this one. The spice wasn’t even that good. The build up and tension was great, but then they actually have sex and it’s not even clear Lark is having an orgasm. All in all just not great writing.
