Witchy Book Recommendations for Fall

The Modern Girl’s Guide to Magic

What I love so much about this book is how it is the total escape. Charming Cove is a picturesque magical town in Cornwall, England and there is even a special street just for witches with cafes, shops and homes. I have always loved England and having this take place on the coast is so dreamy. The characters are relatable (other than being witches, unless you’re also a witch and then even better!) and the way Linsey write creates a total immersive experience. Even though it is almost always good weather in Charming Cove thanks to a weather charm, this book still gives off all of the perfect fall vibes.

Cackle

I wasn’t expecting to like this book as much as I did, but I’m not sure why. Annie picking up and moving to a new place to start a new life after a breakup is something I think a lot of people have done or dream of doing. What I love is how this isn’t in your face witchy or spooky at first. Annie can tell something is up with the town and with her new friend, Sophie, but it isn’t until much later in the book that things really start to come together. It’s a true journey. The small town and Halloween aspect of course make this book perfect for this season.

Hour of the Witch

I was fully expecting this to be full of hard to read and understand puritan language and a convoluted, overwritten story but it is NOT. It is a beautiful and amazing story of defiance, self discovery and sticking it to the man. Mary is at risk of being hung for witchcraft, and has to do whatever she can to prevent that. Is she a witch or is she just like so many women of that time: healers with an interest in the forbidden pleasures of the world, whether that be a three-tined fork or exploring her sexuality. Go on a ride with Mary to get out of her toxic marriage and the only life that has ever been planned for her, which is one of a devoted wife and mother.

A Witch’s Guide to Fake Dating a Demon

Right off the bat this book had my interest. Mariel is another self-proclaimed fuckup of a witch, but it’s only because her family’s expectations of her are so high that she can’t practice the magic she’s really good at and loves: plant magic. Her family’s legacy is in another type of magic and she tries so hard to please them. One day, while practicing her family’s magic, she accidentally summons a demon who cannot leave her side until there is a soul bargain made. This book is fun, sexy and features powerful female characters and friendships. I also love that Mariel is described as being on the thicker side and Ozroth appreciate her body literally and figuratively.

The Ex Hex

After a heartbreak, Vivienne decides to get drunk and take a bath. Harmless right? Wrong. She breaks a big rule of witchery: don’t mix vodka and witchcraft. With a fall scented candle on hand, her and her cousin cast a spell to curse her ex boyfriend, Rhys, to live a very difficult life of “whatever can go wrong, will.” His magic gets wonky and he doesn’t understand why. The problem? His family founded the town she lives in. Or did they? Vivienne isn’t obsessed with her magic, at least not publicly. She teaches at the non-magical part of the local university and doesn’t rely on her magic to solve all her problems. When Rhys comes back to town to make an appearance at the Sahmain festival, they reunited in steamy fashion.

I love Rhys and I love Vivienne and I love them together. There is plenty of buildup but also plenty of reward for the readers’s enjoyment. He teaches her to embrace her magic again and they even learn some secrets about the town’s founding along the way.

The Forgotten Witch

Okay I am obsessed with this book because I also dream about just buying a rundown house in the UK and just picking up and moving there. And then getting to solve a little mystery? Say less. I just devoured this book and felt totally immersed and invested in the story and the characters. I also loved all the descriptions of the landscape and flowers and water and small town. It really just is absolute perfection. Not to mention the fact that the main character doesn’t even realize who or what she is, but her neighbor is more than happy to help her out.
